This study provides an insight into the status quo of resource efficiency and the circular economy in small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the manufacturing sector in Germany in 2024. Companies in eight sectors with between 20 and 1,000 employees were surveyed. The study shows that the importance of resource efficiency in the manufacturing sector has increased significantly since 2015, but that there is still considerable potential for SMEs in the manufacturing sector.

In companies in the metalworking industry, water-miscible cooling lubricants are used in around 90 % of machining processes. At the same time, the digitisation technologies used also require resources themselves: materials, including critical raw material, are used in the production of ICT components. Used in decentralized industrial applications, they help to increase resource efficiency while minimizing the costs of power supply.
